ICYCLE BOSQUES

COMMERCIAL

As Futurist paintings did, the use of straight lines and the repetition of orthogonal volumes create the feeling of dynamism of this space, a spinning and indoors cycling gym-studio, Icycle Bosques. Here, the obviousness of curves as an idea of movement is disregarded.

AÑO: 2018

Its high ceiling lobby can be seen from the façade, as well as the frequent circulation of users–a living display. The envelope made out of exposed concrete slabs and the wood with its matching geometry produce a texture and maintain the movement rhythm of the space. The project is complemented with a terrace and the classrooms are designed to give the user the energetic feeling of a nightclub.

Movement is the essential concept of Icycle–a franchise of spinning & indoor cycling studios and gyms. In this case, the branch in Angelopolis replicates the layout and design of a program that reflects the activities taking place inside.

Since entering, the spatial arrangement starts with the common areas, the ones with the largest flux of people; it gradually becomes more and more private towards the inside, ending with the exercise rooms. The juice bar is quite noticeable from the façade: it is the most transited point and it is right next to a casual lounging area consisting of steps that invites everyone to sit, chat, wait or check their phones. This entry space leads to the lockers and to the hidden doors that open to the cycling rooms.

Since its beginning, it was contemplated not to alter the site's architecture and the façade was kept untouched. Inside, exposed concrete open spaces dominate the scene, echoing New York warehouses.

Several pictorial interventions decorate the walls. The pink orthogonal lines paint the walls, as well as a mirror and the floors, making the open space more coherent: Graffiti and murals represent night's diversity. Built with the wood recovered from the old Bar Cícero, the DJ booth becomes the lead, as the agent who sets the mood of the place. The plants and tropical motifs and rugs create a warm and sensual ambiance.

DANTE

RESTAURANT & BAR

The corner where the street of Edgar Allan Poe meets avenue Emilio Castellar–facing Parque Lincoln–is home to DANTE: a restaurant and bar that was designed as an extension of the park.

The main entrance on Allan Poe makes it possible for the largest clearance of the property to be the view of a terrace. Such space can open in its entirety to see the extraordinary environment of this urban park and of the streets of Polanco.

A classic and leading red marquee crowns the entrance hall with an opening of 180 degrees. This main door leads to the bar and to a wall of photographs, as well as to an interesting selection of graphics by different artists and designers. The austerity in the shapes of the furniture elegantly contrasts with the eclectic design from the wall's finishes and the wood and marble floors. The different heights of the ceilings and the furniture, with its diverse textures, create cozy environments for the diners savoring the culinary art of chef Dante Ferrero.

Regardless of its lack of display windows, the store attracts you in. The main element inside is a stereotomic wood structure that grows as a column and evolves into a soffit, creating depth and dynamism in the entire space. The floor and furniture are all made in a monochromatic concrete to avoid stealing the limelight of the colors and textures from the clothes exhibited. A set of mirrors enlarges the space and replicates the repetitive effect of the wood tree; the modernist furniture was recovered from the forties. In the stairs, a color play keeps feng-shui philosophy in mind. All of these elements together make up the design of this avant-garde store.

Amongst the sculptural furniture the steps with organic shapes–inspired by cammo prints– stand out and bring movement into the space. The interior design is complemented by industrial lighting and exposed installations, graphics in grayscale, details in red and black, furniture that plays with elements–such as steel tubes used to create benches in the dressing rooms, and red lighting for the workout room; all of these detonate the main concept: a dynamic and energetic design.

A constant flow navigates from the entrance through the hall towards the main dining area: a central patio protected by a dome that catches all of the natural ventilation and lights. The space is confined within walls with concrete haunches. The polished concrete floors remind us of the brutalist wave in Mexican architecture.

A wall of Oaxacan rocks acts as the back curtain of the bar. More intimate spaces–like salons–rotate around the patio. The furniture was specially designed for the gastrobar using wood and jute and wicker.

The dramatic touch that breaks the project's stillness is a series of columns tilted towards different directions that hold a concrete slab covering the restaurant-bar in order to protect it from the rain. Uncovered, there is the pool and the lounge areas that make the most out of sunny days and the skyline views. The terrace is dominated by its exposed materials: concrete, steel, and glass, which try to resemble the context of functionalist structures with their lack of ornaments–as seen in eighties' buildings, and not the architecture in the first area of the Historical Center. Perimeter benches and concrete bars made in situ, furniture by Taller Nacional made from reused pine wood and leather in camel hues, cacti, agave, and a marble pool–a sculptural element–make up this urban oasis.

GATRONOMIC MARKET

A new gastronomic market located in a corner of Colonia Roma recreates, with its historic façade, the nostalgic environment of table talks in Porfirian mansions.

YEAR: 2018

The market's façade is updated and highlighted with a belt of black tiles and a landscape project with tropical and hanging plants and vines; the doors kept their deco style.

Inside, there is a set of bars for the different establishments. Finishes are made in wood panelings, color tiles, oak, brass, white tiles on the walls, a 360-degrees main bar covered in black marble, old mirrors, exposed concrete contrasting with the pink and aqua, and a ceiling that maintains the vegetative palette of the façade. The monumental pink-concrete staircase stands out in the composition; it has a brass handrail, wooden slopes, and white marble steps. The staircase is some sort of brutalist sculpture that walks the diners to a patio filled with reflecting pools and plants.

TOH TULUM

HOTEL

Located in the Caribbean coastline of the Yucatan Peninsula, Toh Tulum is an ecological boutique hotel with only 10 rooms surrounding cenotes and a natural reservoir fenced in mangroves, white sand, turquoise sea, and the Mayan port town.

YEAR: 2018

Tulum, Quintana Roo

The architectural structures of the hotel are laid out around the main cenote, Dos Ojos, and two secondary cenotes. The access ramps follow the place's topography, making their way towards the reception and the public areas: the store, restaurant, terrace, yoga palapa, the temazcal, spa, and juice bar; after this, it heads towards the private areas–the rooms.

All of the architectural elements that make up this complex are individual buildings made out of exposed concrete and with a palm rooftop that is irregularly shaped. Each element is built with prefabricated concrete modules that make the most out of passive ventilation systems and natural light.
